A. PURPOSE
The American University of Science ("AUS", "University", "university") is committed to providing a safe and healthful environment for all activities under the jurisdiction of the University. Accordingly, the University has developed this top-level, over-arching health and safety policy to outline responsibilities and establish the framework of compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and University policies and procedures pertaining to worker safety and public health. Compliance with this policy and subordinate health and safety policies, programs, and procedures linked at the end of this policy document is mandatory.
This policy aims to formalize AUS’s commitment to provide a safe and healthy environment for all campus community students, faculty, staff, and visitors and define a strategy for achieving and maintaining university-wide compliance with all environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations.
B. APPLICABILITY
This policy applies to all faculty, staff, students, researchers, and all other individuals working at AUS.
C. STATEMENT
1. Definitions
Health and Safety: health and safety encompasses personal security, public safety, emergency preparedness, public health, workplace safety, safe and healthful facilities, and protection of environmental, physical, and monetary resources.
2. Principles
2.1. AUS conducts teaching, research and all other operations in compliance with applicable standards, codes, regulations, and laws. Safety and environmental protection are a daily part of every person’s responsibilities.
2.1. The health and safety of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors shall be a principal consideration in the planning and conduct of all activities and programs and the design, construction, modification, or renovation of all University buildings and facilities.
2.3. This broad policy requires that health and safety regulations of Federal, State, and local authorities, appropriate consensus standards of recognized organizations, and university-specific policies are met.
3. Roles and Responsibilities
3.1. Campus Designee: the campus designee shall maintain administrative policies and procedures and implement programs to promote and advance safe, secure and healthy property and programs.
3.2. Employees, Students and Community Members: members of the AUS community shall comply with applicable health and safety policies, procedures and laws in order to fulfill their mutual responsibilities for achieving excellence in health and safety. Supervisors have responsibility for those who report to them.
4. Enforcement and Response to Non-compliance
4.1. The University shall comply with all applicable health, safety and environmental laws, regulations and requirements.
4.2. Violations of this policy, including subordinate health and safety policies, programs, or procedures, may result in disciplinary measures in accordance with University Laws and By-Laws and applicable policies and procedures.
