FAITH STATEMENT
Declaration of Faith of The American University of Science
Preamble
The American University of Science (hereinafter referred to as "the University" or "AUS"), steadfastly intertwining the pursuit of scientific knowledge with the profound tapestry of evangelical Protestant tradition, hereby articulates this Declaration of Faith. This sacred document stands as a testament to the institution's spiritual identity, guiding its endeavors in higher education, research, and service. Reflecting the theological convictions of the Board and administration, this declaration seeks to elucidate the foundational beliefs of the University for prospective students, faculty, administrators, Board members, and external constituencies, affirming an unwavering adherence to the historic creeds and doctrinal principles of Christianity.
Article I: Scriptural Authority
The University solemnly affirms the Holy Bible, encompassing the sixty-six canonical books of the Old and New Testaments, as the divinely inspired, infallible Word of God. This sacred text is acknowledged as the supreme authority over all domains of life and knowledge, thus guiding the academic and spiritual endeavors of the University. It is upon this sacred foundation that the University commits to ensuring that its quest for truth and wisdom remains aligned with the eternal precepts of Holy Scripture.
Article II: Trinitarian Orthodoxy
The University upholds the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, venerating one God in three co-eternal Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This divine doctrine serves as the cornerstone of the University's theological and academic framework, inspiring an approach to education that reveres the Creator in all facets of learning and community engagement.
Article III: Divine Sovereignty of the Father
The University acknowledges God the Father, the infinite Spirit, as sovereign over all, eternal, and immutable in divine attributes. Governance, pedagogical methodologies, and scholarly research are conducted with profound reverence for His supreme authority, aiming to reflect His divine will and purposes in every endeavor.
Article IV: The Christological Foundation
The University asserts the complete humanity and absolute deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, united since His incarnation. His virgin birth, sinless life, atoning death, and glorious resurrection are affirmed as the foundation of redemption. This central tenet informs the University's academic mission, imbuing it with a commitment to grace and truth in every pursuit.
Article V: Empowerment through the Holy Spirit
The University recognizes the indwelling presence and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in believers, acknowledging His essential role in enlightening, guiding, and empowering the academic community. The distribution of spiritual gifts by the Holy Spirit is affirmed, enriching the collective endeavor to pursue academic excellence, spiritual growth, and faithful stewardship of knowledge.
Article VI: Doctrine of Salvation and Eschatological Hope
Salvation is proclaimed by the University as a gift of God’s grace, received through faith in Jesus Christ. The hope of Christ’s return, the final judgment, and the consummation of God’s kingdom are held as sacred beliefs that shape the institution's vision for the future, informing its educational philosophy and community ethos.
Article VII: Affirmation of Creation and Spiritual Conflict
The University affirms the biblical account of creation, advocating for a harmonious relationship between faith and scientific inquiry. The reality of spiritual adversity led by Satan is recognized, underscoring the necessity of spiritual vigilance and integrity within academic endeavors and beyond.
This Declaration of Faith is subject to periodic review and ratification by the University's Board of Governors to ensure its ongoing relevance and alignment with the institution's mission and the evangelical Protestant tradition. The document shall be prominently featured in official University publications and on the website, accessible via AUS Faith Statement, demonstrating a profound commitment to transparency and doctrinal integrity.
This Declaration has been duly reviewed by the University's Board of Governors on August 3, 2023, and ratified with solemn approval on September 3, 2023, evidencing the institution's steadfast dedication to its foundational beliefs and principles.
